Hummingbird Yurt

The Hummingbird yurt design was inspired by a sketch Bill Coperthwaite made while we were working together on a yurt on Whidbey 15 years ago. Bill built an early version of this as a display at the Country Fair in Maine. The sketch has been pinned above my desk for years. This is my interpretation.

A peaceful space for meditation, gathering or just hanging out.

“Building yurts is a passion for me. I apprenticed to Bill building yurts as a kid.  Now, with all the talent of a company building fine homes available for these projects, I still feel compelled to explore the form and find well-crafted creative expression through building yurts 50 years later”

About JADE Yurts and Bill Coperthwaite

JADE builds wood yurts, with tapered walls, in the style built by Bill Coperthwaite. Bill introduced yurts to the west in the early 1960s.  Throughout his life, Bill continued to design and build wood yurts with outward sloping walls. His more than 200 designs grew on experience, eventually growing to multiple stories and concentric rings – up to 4 rings, 54’ diameter, and 2,700 square feet.  Bill’s interest was twofold: Democratic design – helping people gain confidence and skills, in creating their own beautiful space, and as a design lineage – each yurt exploring the bounds of engineering and aesthetics.

“My work with yurts has continued in Bill’s design lineage, incorporating my interpretation, aesthetics, craftsmanship engineering, and innovation.  While at JADE we primarily build fine homes, I can’t help but continue to explore this rich form and express whim and beauty through building yurts.” — Dan Neumeyer
